Working SAHM

Working from home with two mini-preneurs running ramped has been one of the more challenging parts of being an entrepreneur. No one understands more than a working parent how hard it is to keep up on the house as well as the kids and work all at the same time. It’s a juggling act that I’m not sure even the most successful of business persons has yet to perfect. At the end of the day, you do the best you can do, and that should be enough to satisfy the voice in your head telling you that you didn’t get enough done that day because the kids were more needy than usual, right? Wrong.

Being an entrepreneur means that if you didn’t get enough done that day because the kids may have needed you more, that you make up for those hours after the kids have gone to bed. You stay up later to fit in the work and laundry and dishes that didn’t get done. You get up a few hours earlier than normal to pack orders or send emails that still need your attention after the kids drained it all the day before. I am not saying these things to be negative or to scare anyone from creating a job for themselves that they are passionate about and love showing up to every day. I am just pointing out that being an entrepreneur and stay at home parent means that you don’t always get to have a full cup. It can be the absolute most draining time of your life.

On the other hand, it can be the absolute best and most fulfilling time of your life if you allow it to be. Stop obsessing over every single piece of laundry being done each week, stop worrying about missing trash day last week, those things are not the end of the world. Be present for your family, for your kids, be present in your job and keep making power moves to provide for the family you work your ass off to be able to stay home with. Allow the kids a place to help with your work. I have learned in my 5 years of motherhood that they just want to be near you, it doesn’t matter what you are doing, just let them be a part of it. It will be fulfilling and rewarding to you as a parent and also educational and mean the world to them.

Sometimes, you don’t get it all done in a day, and yes, that’s okay. It however doesn’t mean you get to give up and save it for tomorrow. Work the long hours and days now while the kids are still young enough to enjoy sitting next to you while you do it.

My 5-year-old loves to sit next to me and do his workbooks while I work during the day. It doesn’t last forever, and the house is a freaking disaster after a long day of me working from my kitchen table, and let’s be honest I only get the real stuff done when the baby is sleeping, but we figure it out, one day at a time.

The Power of a Good Podcast

I know I’m not the only stay at home mom that goes stir crazy with the usual daily life. Let me just tell you about the power that listening to a motivational, inspiring, empowering podcast daily can boost your energy.

Sometimes, no amount of coffee will open my eyelids to be awake enough to keep up with my toddler all day long after a long night of being up with my newborn. I have tried numerous different things to try to get my energy up during the day. I have found that nothing has quite been able to boost my mood than listening to a really good, motivational podcast. I started with the Rachel Hollis Podcast a few years ago and listening to her tell stories about being a mom of young children and also an aspiring entrepreneur and hearing that some of the struggles I was experiencing as a new mom, a woman, and businesswoman, was something that others struggled with as well was so refreshing. Seriously if you want some business and mom motivation along with some good laughs, start at the beginning of her podcast in 2017 and start boosting your moods on the regular. She started a line of journals for every-day gratitude and it’s extremely easy to follow, and a great way to set up some goals for yourself and get them out into the universe on the daily. It’s easy to get addicted to the feeling of getting stuff done and having someone in your ear telling you that you are indeed a bad ass and to just keep pushing because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Another Podcast I have been listening to lately has been the Almost30 Podcast. Not as much motivational business talk in this one as much as just talking about all of the relevant things in life to where I’m at in life these days. I enjoy all the topics the 2 women that run the podcast discuss and they often have a guest expert on the topic they are covering in the episode. Just a great thing to have in your ear while doing laundry or housework.

The last types of Podcasts I will listen to will be hobby podcasts, or things that I am interested in learning about. I am currently starting a cut flower garden and am listening to a few podcasts about flower gardening.

If you’re like me at all and need something that makes you feel more accomplished during a day of stay-at-home mom tasks, que up a good podcast and let your ears do the work for you that day. You will feel more awake and ready to tackle the tasks at hand, and you might even learn something in the process!

Adding a Mini-preneuer to the Mix

WE HAD A BABY!!!

Wow O Wow does no one tell you what adding a half of employee to the mix does to you as an entrepreneur. Don’t get me wrong, having a baby has been one of the most joyful times of our lives, but it has also been one of the most difficult adjustments as an entrepreneur that we have ever had to deal with. We think about perfecting the new additions to the bedroom and spending the money to buy all of the things that come with a tiny human. You don’t think toooo much about the fact that you are going to have to be on more of a schedule (or create a schedule in general) or be home at a certain time because ya know, kids like to sleep at night and not pull all nighters working. Babies are very flexible for the most part, they will sleep whenever/ wherever, and they tend to fit right into your life seamlessly. That is unless you are a frantic entrepreneur that doesn’t always know the day of the week or how many days it’s been since the baby has had a bath. It’s been a year now, and things are definitely starting to even out, but here are a few tips I picked up along the way- usually the hard way.

  • Ask for Help. Period. It’s not a hard one to understand, but it’s sometimes hard for us hard-headed, entrepreneurs that think we need to be superheroes and do it all on our own to ask someone to help us. DO IT. You are going to need it.
  • Create a Schedule and STICK to it as much as you possibly can. It will allow you to stay sane and allow your mini to keep up with you during the day.
  • Outsource, Outsource, Outsource. This is along the lines of asking for help. If you have someone else that can take something off your plate, even just for a while. Take advantage.
  • Slow Down. Don’t rush yourself to do things before you are ready. You are an entrepreneur and are allowed to move your own schedule to accommodate YOU. Don’t forget that.

Good luck out there, and remember you are not alone.

Working for yourself doesn’t mean you get to do what you want. Not yet.

Some people don’t realize how spur of the moment our lives are. We don’t always get to do what we want. Friday afternoon 3 pm we packed a cooler and headed to Dunham’s to cash out on 2 kayaks we’ve been saving our money for and had our eyes on for almost a year now. I am talking about the absolute highlight of my summer so far. We got out stuff together, and headed for the river. On the way someone, called and needed assistance on a project we had been working on. A little more than defeated, we turned around and headed for home to help put out one of the many fires we usually tend to on a daily basis. When people hear the term “entrepreneur” they immediately assume when you work for yourself, you can do whatever you want with your time. Holy guacamole, let me just stress the truth about this assumed thought. Being an entrepreneur means devoting everything you have to your passion. It means not going out on weekends. It means not sleeping in, even on Saturdays. It means to always, always be thinking of taking the next step on you journey to success as an entrepreneur. It means dropping plans or changing them at the very last minute just to see a deal go through. It means to miss events because there might be a hope of a new connection or a new way to make headway in your business. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not easy to watch all of your friends party together on the weekends, or spend money, or go on vacations .The difference between you and them, you want so much more than what life is dealing you right now. This doesn’t mean you need to completely give up on a social life, without one, life would extra, extra lonely. It just means we have to constantly check ourselves and our goals to make sure the plans we have are bettering us for a brighter tomorrow.

What are we doing here?

Okay,
So at this point if you are reading my blog you have probably wondered why you have even stumbled across this page. Well, here it is. We are here to inspire each other though some of the most challenging years of our lives! Being an entrepreneur is by far one of the most challenging jobs in the world. Let alone being a female entrepreneur in this world. There is no rule book, no specific guidelines to follow to be successful. There is no “boss” telling you what needs to be done or which task to complete next. There is no one clocking hours to make sure you show up on time. It’s just you. YOU have to make yourself show up for yourself every single day, whatever that may look like for you. YOU have to show up daily for your dream. No one else cares about it as much as you do. SO, here I am writing down all of the hardships, insecurities, and blissful failures for my readers to pour over and know that they are not alone in this lonely world of entrepreneurship.
